Martha Leona Chisum Steele

Martha Leona Chisum was the youngest daughter of John Monroe and Mary Elizabeth “Polly” Chisum.  She was born in Cherokee County, Texas circa 1853.  She came to Limestone County with her parents and five siblings in 1855.

Martha married Hampton Steele, the oldest son of Alfonso and Mary Ann Steele, on December 4, 1867.  At the time he was a widower with five children.  She was his second wife.  Martha and Hampton had four children: Clara Alice (1870-1952), Leslie (1872-1958), Thomas (1873-1960), and Norma (1875-1893).

Martha died circa 1879.  The location of her burial is unknown, but she is most likely buried in the Tidwell Cemtery.
